Important Information: The Law Is Changing – V-16 Warning Light to Become Mandatory: A Safer, Smarter Way to Signal a Breakdown

Jennifer Cunningham Insurance wants to keep our clients informed and safe on the road, so see our V-16 warning light information below.

Breaking down on the road is never ideal, but placing a warning triangle in today’s traffic conditions can put you at serious risk. In Spain, current rules require drivers to walk at least 50 metres behind their vehicle on a motorway to place a triangle. On single carriageways, it’s double the distance: 50 metres in front and behind. This can mean walking up to 200 metres on foot, often next to fast-moving traffic, in bad weather, or low visibility.

In 2019, 58 pedestrians died on Spain’s high-capacity roads, many after exiting their vehicles to place or retrieve a triangle. Clearly, a safer alternative is needed.

That’s why Spain’s traffic authority (DGT) is promoting the V-16 hazard warning light, a modern, more secure replacement for traditional warning triangles.

What Is the V-16?

The V-16 is a compact, battery-powered beacon that flashes a bright amber light in all directions. It’s visible from up to 1,000 metres, even in fog, rain, or darkness. Best of all, you can activate and place it on the roof of your car without exiting the vehicle, helping keep you safe in dangerous roadside situations.

Many V-16 models are now connected devices, meaning they also send your vehicle’s location to DGT 3.0, Spain’s national traffic alert system. Other drivers receive this information in real time through mobile apps, GPS systems, or in-car displays, allowing them to slow down or change lanes well in advance.

A Smart, Inclusive Solution

The V-16 is part of Spain’s Road Safety Strategy 2030, which aims to reduce road deaths by 50%. It works with all vehicles, regardless of age or model, and is ideal for people with reduced mobility who may struggle to walk to place a triangle.

New Law from 1st January 2026

From 1st January 2026, it will be mandatory by law to use an approved, connected V-16 warning light instead of the traditional triangle. To comply, the device must include a non-removable built-in SIM card that communicates directly with DGT 3.0, ensuring your location is transmitted automatically in the event of a breakdown.

To help our clients prepare, we have a list of government-recommended V-16 devices that meet the legal requirements.

When Should You Switch?

While the law comes into full effect in January 2026, early adoption is strongly recommended. Not only will it keep you safer, but it also ensures you’re prepared well ahead of the deadline.

At Jennifer Cunningham Insurance, your safety is our priority. We are committed to keeping our clients informed about changes that matter.
